Santa Rosa (Florida) County Sheriff Bob Johnson announced Monday that Jason Curtis, 53, and his ex-stepdaughter Rachiel Moore, 25, have been arrested in the death of Colby Vinson.

Police in Navarre, Florida, found Vinson’s body on March 19 after responding to a call at an apartment complex in the beachside town in Florida’s panhandle.

Vinson, 24, was dead on the floor of the apartment with his 4-year-old daughter sitting next to him.

Curtis has been charged with first-degree murder while Moore, 25, was also arrested on suspicion of tampering with evidence and being an accessory to first-degree murder, according to Johnson.

Curtis was arrested in Alabama, Johnson said. When the Cullman County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Office arrested Curtis, they found a firearm in his vehicle along with a handwritten note that included a description of how Vinson looked, what car he drove, his home address and his work address, Johnson said.

According to the arrest reports, Vinson had just been granted 50/50 custody of the 4-year-old. Moore was said to be “distraught” over the ruling.

The arrest report states Moore contacted Curtis the day the ruling was filed and told him about the custody arrangement, according to WALA-TV.

According to the arrest report, authorities believe Curtis shot Vinson when the 4-year-old was nearby.

“I will say this about Mr. Curtis though, what a human piece of trash,” Johnson said at a press conference to announce the arrest.

“I mean, to shoot somebody with their four-year-old child right there. I mean, I get up here ad nauseam and tell you about how I’m shocked about how people treat other people, this just goes beyond that. It’s horrible.”
