Zoo officials said that two Galapagos tortoises were stolen on Nov. 30, but did not say how they were taken, WJAX reported.

Officials are also watching hours of video surveillance to see who took the animals.

The animals had been at the zoo since 2017 as part of a captive breeding program.

Galapagos tortoises are given a special diet and supplements and cannot be left outside at night when the weather is cool, so zoo officials are concerned about the safety of the juvenile reptiles.

They also cannot be legally sold, WJAX reported.

The tortoises have been microchipped, but the zoo is still asking for help, saying if anyone has brought home a large, black tortoise, to contact the St. Augustine Police Department at 904-825-1070.
