Billboard was first to report the Springsteen and Sony deal.
The New York Times confirmed the story, citing sources briefed on the agreement.
It was the largest single-artist-catalog purchase made, according to The Hill.
The Times said the deal has not been announced publicly, but was closed recently.
If the reports are accurate, Sony will own the entire Springsteen library including “Born to Run,” Born in the U.S.A.” and “Glory Days.”
Sony will also have ownership of the 15-times platinum album “Born In The U.S.A.” and the five-times platinum album “The River,” Billboard reported.
Other iconic singers and songwriters have also recently sold some or all of their music.
Bob Dylan sold his songwriting library to Universal Music Publishing Group in 2020 for more than $300 million.
Springsteen had worked with Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony for his career, but he was the owner of the copyrights to his songs, the Times reported. But Universal Music Publishing Group administered the catalog and future projects, The Hill reported.
Over his career, Springsteen has sold 65.5 million albums in the U.S., according to The Recording Industry Association of America. He’s a member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1999 and has 20 Grammy awards and 50 nominations.
