RED OAK, Iowa – A police cruiser heading to an apartment fire is blamed for hitting and killing a young girl who was on the road.
Vana Marie Redd, 12, was on her way to a grocery store to buy snacks with a gift card she got for Christmas, her older sister told The Des Moines Register.
A police report from the Iowa State Patrol said the officer driving the Red Oak police cruiser had his lights and siren on when Redd “ran into the roadway” Monday night.
Investigators would not share the speed the cruiser was going with KMTV, and said the officer who was driving is on paid leave while the Iowa State Patrol investigates.
Redd’s older sister, Gracie, described her little sister as amazing to KMTV, saying, “She was absolutely hilarious. She could make anybody laugh. She was a very big social butterfly.”
